Simian Smallpox epidemic (Mpox)

Definition: A rare viral disease of zoonotic origin (its virus is transmitted from animals to humans). Symptoms in infected humans, are similar to smallpox, however its severity is lower.

Transmission: transmitted from person to person by direct contact, droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces.

Incubation period:  The incubation period is the one between the stage of infection and the stage of the onset of symptoms. It ranges from 6 days to 16 days, and the rash appears in the body 3 days after infection, starting with the face and then extends to the upper and lower extremities.

Signs and Symptoms:

Suspected Condition: A person with an acute and unexplained rash anywhere on the body, and has one or more of the following signs or symptoms:

◾ High body temperature

◾ Severe muscle and back pain

◾ Headache and feeling tired

◾ The occurrence of enlarged lymph nodes

◾ Low energy in the body

Treatment:

◾ Smallpox vaccine

◾ Antiviral drugs

◾ Immunoglobulin

Precautionary Measures:

◾ Avoid dealing with people coming from infected places (Democratic Republic of the Congo and some areas of West and Central Africa) unless it is confirmed that they are free of infection.

◾ If someone you know is diagnosed or suspected of having monkeypox, avoid close contact and make sure to report them to the official health authorities.

◾ Follow the tips and precautionary measures recommended by the Jordanian Ministry of Health to reduce the risk of infection.

◾ You have to take care of hand hygiene, wash them frequently, disinfect and clean surfaces constantly.

Travel tips and advice:

◾ Avoid contact with infected people, body fluids with the virus as well as deceased people.

◾ Avoid contacting, transporting or carrying wild animals, whether alive or dead.

◾ Cook food (meat) thoroughly before eating.

◾ Stay away from contact with contaminated as well as used needles and syringes.

◾ Seek health assistance for returnees upon arrival when they develop any of the symptoms of the disease (fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, rash) within three weeks
